For The Record - My Views on EHSI
I have been made aware that there is some misinformation out there on my views regarding EHSI so I want to set the record straight.
I have said that 'I do not have a dog in this hunt'. I have several neighbors who are very happy with Spanish Immersion. They want their children to be able to learn to be bi-lingual and believe that this program is the best choice for their children. I am supportive of this program and am happy they are able to make such a choice.
There are two members of the current board with children in EHSI. One of them has opted out of this race. Per my count, four (3) of the nine (9) candidates in this years race have children in EHSI. No matter what your view on the program I do not think it wise to have a 'voting block' with any agenda - including supporting EHSI. They are only one (1) school of many in the district. My definition of diversity extends beyond race or gender - we need diverse viewpoints on the board and I am not sure a community voting block leading to a board majority is smart for the community.
My concern with EHSI, like all of our schools, is that it be treated fairly. I am not at all supportive of creating even the perception of inequality within our community (regarding public schools). I also do not believe that we should be talking about our schools as 'revenue' generators -- that way of thinking can lead us down a path of decision making that could lead to poor decision making.
I am concerned that the board spend more time thinking thru the unintended consequences of new policies in general -- in the specific example of EHSI I am concerned that we provide all (public school) students with access and opportunity. Daniel Patrick Moynahan, the former Democratic Senior Senator from NY, once said that 'people are intitled to their opinions, but not their own facts". Anyone can see from the public records that EHSI's racial mix is materially different from any other school in the system. Data is not available for socioeconomic analysis, but there is likely a skew in demographics there as well. I am all for choice. Our rhetoric, however, needs to match our policy - otherwise we risk hypocracy. I am not aware of any specific barrier to access, but the data suggests that questions need to be asked. I do not have a preconceived set of bias' or policy changes in mind. My larger point is that the board needs members who will debate and add more critical thinking to all issues.
I want all of our schools in the district to do well - including EHSI. Anyone who is concerned about my views on this subject or who wants additional clarity please feel free to contact me on this 'Contact Me' tab of this website.
